DSBN Expands Specialist High Skills Majors Offerings

SHSM AnncThe District School Board of Niagara is opening up even more pathways to success for students.

In an event held at the site of the Board’s latest home build in partnership with Mountainview Homes on May 21, the Hon. Jim Bradley, MPP for St. Catharines and DSBN Director of Education Warren Hoshizaki announced an expansion of the Board’s popular Specialist High Skills Majors programs.

The DSBN has been approved to offer eight new SHSM programs beginning in September of 2010. The new programs are Regional Agriculture at South Lincoln High School, Regional Arts at Port Colborne High School and Welland Centennial, Business at A.N. Myer and E.L. Crossley, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) at West Park Secondary, Ridgeway-Crystal Beach High School and Stamford Collegiate.

“The District School Board of Niagara has been a leader in Ontario in delivering the Specialist High Skills Majors programs,” said Minister Bradley.

“Students of the DSBN have experience great personal success through their participation in the SHSM programs. They’re learning and earning credits in new and innovative ways,” said Hoshizaki.

With the announcement, the DSBN will now offer students 37 different SHSM programs in 11 different economic sectors; agriculture, arts and culture, business, construction, energy, horticulture and landscaping, hospitality and tourism, ICT, manufacturing, welding and transportation

Over 700 students will participate in these programs.
