Skilled trades student Olympics in Ontario

Students from across the province will have the chance to show off their skills in fields such as carpentry, welding, brick masonry and electrical wiring at the upcoming 23rd annual Olympic-style skilled trades competition.

On May 1, 1,900 students from across Ontario will compete in 63 career fields at the Ontario Technological Skills Competition (OTSC), which aims to inspire youth to consider careers in the skilled trades and technology sectors. An estimated 30,000 spectators are expected.

The competition will take place at RIM Park and Manulife Sportsplex in Waterloo, Ont.

The facility’s field house and outdoor tents will accommodate the young cabinetmakers, carpenters and electricians who will create impressive “real-world” projects.

The arenas’ former ice pads will house metalworking and engine shops and HVAC areas.

The OTSC, the largest of its kind in Canada, also features a Career Exploration Showcase, will also have 60 interactive exhibit booths from industry, education and government.

Winners of gold, silver and bronze medals will be announced at the closing ceremonies at Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex on May 2.

Top competitors will also be in line for several monetary awards sponsored by industry and professional associations. Most gold medal winners will advance to the Skills Canada National Competition in Edmonton May 13 to 16. Visit www.skillsontario.com for more information.
